Why checklists are vital for C.S.I. professionals

In 1935, at Wright Air Field in Dayton, Ohio, an airplane crash resulted in multiple deaths to the onboard crew. The cause of the disaster was determined not to be from any mechanical failure but from simple pilot error during preflight preparation.

It was because of this event that the aviation community was the first to create the idea of a checklist procedure to be set in place to ensure all required preflight procedures were completed each and every time.

That checklist procedure is still in place today and has been recognized by other professions as an essential process to be used.

Much of work today has entered a similar sophistication of activities like aviation, to include medical clinicians, software designers, financial managers, fire fighters, lawyers, and most certainly law enforcement officers.

What all these occupations do are now too complex for them to carry out reliably from memory alone. Multiple fields, in other words, have become ‘too much airplane for one person to fly.’
